Zelie Adebola is a trained warrior by Mama Agba, her village's matriarch, who is a diviner-one meant to become a maji- but magic is long gone. It has been for eleven years. King Saran made sure he wiped all people with white hair from existence and eradicated their ashe (magic). When a scroll falls into her hands, it ignites the dormant power within her. Now, along with her brother Tzain and princess Amari, Zelie must take a journey to bring back magic to Orisha.

I cannot say enough about this amazing novel! Its hook captivated me, and its lore made me want to delve deeper into Western African mythology. And its character development—mwah! Chef's kiss. The book was beautifully edited. It is told in the present tense from the first-person point of view. The chapters were enough to keep me captivated. I can't wait for the movie to come out!

For my Christian readers, it does contain swearing. Uses of the BA word, d*mn, hell, and a**.

I would rate this PG-13 for sensual scenes between characters.
