"Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea"
Updated: Aug 18, 2021
One of my fav childhood Disney sequels. I think it is so underrated and got a lot of flack. The reason is that of the animation. It's a lesser quality than the first film which is known as "cheap" animation. Which is ridiculous! Released to Direct-to-Video in 2000, the Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea follows the story of Eric and Ariel's 12-year-old daughter Melody played by Tara Strong. If you were born in the 90s, you might recognize her voice as Tommy from Rugrats or Bubbles from Power Puff girls.
Almost all the original cast from the first movie reprises their roles, including Pat Carroll who played Ursula.
I absolutely adore the song "For a Moment" mostly because it's a duet between Ariel and Melody.
When Morgana, Ursula's crazy sister, threatens the life of baby Melody, Ariel builds a wall around the castle to keep melody away from the ocean. 12 years later, Melody has found a way to the sea and does this regularly, unbeknownst to her parents. My favorite moment has to be when she meets Tip and Dash, the walrus and penguin duo. They are so funny! Don't write this off because of the different animation. Think of it rather as a continuation of Ariel's story and her transition into motherhood. Give this movie a chance and you might fall in love with it.
