Ra
Ra, the sun god, rose to power in the fifth dynasty and was considered King of the Gods.
His main cult center was at the site of Iunu that was called Heliopolis by the Greeks. It translates to the city of the sun.
Here's how:
Heli means sun and opolis mean city. Iunu is the ancient Egypt name that means pillars-no one is sure as to why it had that name.
As the sun deity, Ra would travel across the sky until night when he sank beneath the earth to the Duat (underworld). Sutah was in charge of fighting off the many dangers including Apep the Great snake. Ra also traveled with Sia (perception), Hu (command), and Heka (magic).
Apep was a giant snake who would attempt to stop the sun boat's journey every night by eating it or stopping it with its hypnotic stare. These myths represented Ra as being reborn. Just like the sunsets every day, it rises again.
